Why do the tendrils shown in the photo appear strange?

Tendrils are un-branched and begin in the leaf axils. However, in this phenomenon the tendrils did not start out from the axils and instead began at the base of the flower and then continued their growth by sticking to the fruit. This phenomenon was found in an experimental variety that is not commercial.
