What is Verticillium race 2 and what can be done to prevent crop infection?

There are now two separate races of Verticillium dahliae attacking tomatoes. The symptoms are identical with both races exhibiting a yellow fan-shaped area on the outer edge of the leaf with a light brown colour in the lower part of the stem vascular system. Both species can survive on alternate hosts, plant parts and in the soil for many years. Methods used to control the disease include soil sterilization, fumigation and generally maintaining high standards of cleanliness and sanitation to reduce the innoculum.
